Mining and Resources

Mining and resources

The mining and resources sector continues to be the backbone of Australia’s economy. To quote Australian historian Geoffrey Blainey, it’s “the rush that never ended”. But there’s no guarantee that the resources sector will maintain this position. If there’s one constant within this sector – it’s change. To sustain prosperity, the mining and resources sector need become increasingly innovative, agile, skilled and socially and environmentally conscious. Ever-changing government initiatives alongside the world’s shifting resource consumption trends means it’s no time to rest on laurels and in order to tell good stories, our leaders in this sector need to do good things. Forward Communications has worked extensively within the mining sector on projects as varied as internal communications change management communication campaigns and sustainability reports to case studies and human resource recruitment videos.

Testimonial: Greg Courts, Rio Tinto

It is rare to come across someone as creative and articulate as Greer. I had the pleasure of working with Greer for the past year, where she developed and supported the roll out of a communication plan across the whole organisation. I was particularly impressed by Greer's ability to quickly understand the content, and push forward and engage with my team and all relevant stakeholders to prepare the overarching plan and then drove the implementation. It is not always easy as a consultant to drive change in an organisation but her perseverance and ability to connect with people made all that possible.

CASE STUDY: Change management internal communications across a global network

CHALLENGE: One of the world’s largest mining companies was journeying through organisational change and internal communications resources were stretched.

SOLUTION: This Fortune 500 company engaged Forward Communications to run an internal communications change management program, which involved producing a range of written and visual content for the globally networked organisation’s intranet, Yammer, e-newsletters and other communication channels. During this process, Forward Communications worked in a truly “global” way, interacting via WebEx video or audio with offices in Shanghai, London, Montreal, Singapore, Chicago, Perth and Brisbane. Forward Communications resources regularly worked from the Brisbane office, but also travelled to Perth and Montreal to attend stakeholder engagement workshops. Initially, Forward Communications was engaged for just a six-week period, but the contract was renewed three times to bring it to a 12-month term. Throughout this time, the scope and projects awarded to Forward Communications extended also.

RESULT:

  • Forward Communications developed a range of strategic communication materials to communicate the change including a communications cascade, FAQs, slide decks, video and “town hall” scripts for executives, people profiles and feature stories

  • Forward Communications rebranded an internal function to better reflect the organisation’s change; this included a new name, a new SharePoint intranet site, a series of feature stories and case studies, photography briefs and a Yammer activation strategy. The result was an elevated awareness of this internal function and uptake of its services

  • For another function, Forward Communications developed a manifesto, fact sheets, case studies, feature stories, people profiles and other collateral to heighten its internal reputation.
